LOVE LOVE LOVE! and what's not to love! The reviews are right- this place is clean, authentic, food is amazing and the customer service is out of this world! Went for lunch- dragged a friend- amused her with a to-go menu- she spent the drive highlighting all of the things she wanted to order and making a list of all of the things she did not understand. (see: "what's a STREET taco- does that mean it's hood?!") The lady who took our orders answered all of her questions and was great about explaining the menu. She took our names for the orders and remembered them! (that was big to me- I am a dork) I got the chimichangas because I saw a picture and I am a visual creature. So YUM- also had to get my own shrimp taco because my friend would not share (why does she think I brought her?!) She got a smattering of tacos- but the very best was the salsa bar. All of it too wonderful. Bottom line- I like tacos, you like tacos, have a taco and get it from here. If you do not like tacos... well... I really just can't understand what you are doing with your life.

Discovered this place through 225 magazine and it did not disappoint. I went this past thursday and got tacos and carne asada fries but they were all gone before I could take a pic. Needless to say, the food was delicious. Of course.. I had dreams about these carne asada fries and went back saturday. The fries are nicely home made, the meat and queso are good and flavorful but not over powering. I love to add the habanero sauce on top for some added kick. Great spot, will definitely be back often...and hopefully try more than the carne asada fries.

I have tried the street tacos, burritos, and tamales. All have been fantastic. And I drink way too much of their horchata everytime! Carne Asada is my favorite.

I've been eating here for lunch on a weekly basis for almost 10 months. I think these are the best tacos in town and I love all the variety of meats you get to try. All of the tacos that I've tried had very high quality meat with very little fat, this means they could seem dry to some people but the solution is their wonderful salsa bar. I prefer a little more salt on mine which really brings out all of the flavors. The sweet lady up front always gives wonderful service with a smile. I love giving them my business, check this place out but get there early if you want lunch, it gets hopping pretty quick.

Great Mexican food! I recommend this place. The food is good, the people are friendly and the service is great. I have been a number of time and will continue. Great lunches.

I've been on the lookout for a good, cheap, quick taco joint in Baton Rouge. Bonus points if it also has authentic tacos. So far I haven't found a place that suits all (or even a large subset) of these requirements. I was crossing my fingers Mr. Taco could deliver. Alas, I was fairly disappointed. The tacos are decent, but a little small and not all that flavorful. The tacos I get at my favorite sketchy taco stand at home are about 50% bigger and 50% more delicious for the price. The taco combo came with a choice of beans or soup - I tried the soup and it was just kind of bland and greasy. I hate to pan this place since the lady who runs it was incredibly sweet and friendly, but the food just doesn't deliver.

Fantastic!!! My whole family ate for under 30 bucks! Food was excellent and very fresh. It was our first time there, but it had been recommended highly by our friends. We will go back again and again. One last thing, I am a bit of a clean freak and the place was spotless.

The food here is OK. I ordered the Chicken Burrito and it was a "normal" tasting burrito. I felt like the ingredients could have been a little fresher. Maybe they were fresh, but it didn't jump out at me. I don't think this place is 100% Mexican and that was what I initially thought when I heard friends describe the food, which sounded like a mix of Mexican and Central American. My thoughts were confirmed as I first entered and saw a Salvadorian flag hanging next to a Mexican flag. The place is clean and the staff very friendly.

Mr. Taco is great. I have only had the street tacos so far (a grilled corn tortilla filled with your choice of meat, raw onions, cilantro, and cotija) and they are good enough to keep me coming back. I tried the chicken al pastor, pork al pastor, and pork carnitas. The carnitas are my favorite. They have 9 different meat choices (if I recall correctly) for those that can't decide, and multiple side options. The tamale is awesome, the queso is some of the best I've ever had, and I will try the rice next time I go. They also have enchiladas, burritos, etc, not to mention a myriad of salsas and drink choices that you won't find in your standard Mexican restaurant. They even have churros (and more) for dessert. I say GO, go now!

Huge portions & speedy service but that's the only positives about this place. Beef quality is terrible! I got a carne asada burrito & shredded beef taco. The meet was full of fat & chewy. Taco Bell tastes better..

About as close to the real thing in this area. Cozy fun family vibe. Feels like they know you. I've never had anything bad here. Loooove the taco combos. Their chicken tortilla soup I could eat whenever but perfect for a cold! And they have Mexican coca cola - the coke in a glass bottle with sugar cane. Can't beat an ice cold coke in a glass bottle! And the salsa bar?! Hello!! Love!

This is the real deal! Trust me when I say that this is authentic Mexican food, and in no way resembles what you'd get at Taco Bell. Tacos, of course, are the star here, and they come with your choice of a variety of meats. The menu also features burritos, tamales, tostadas, and even quesadillas. For those of you with a bigger appetite or who prefer to eat with a fork, there are plates, or platos as they're called. You can order the tacos in a combo, from one to five tacos, and it comes with one side of your choice, plus a fountain drink. I had the two taco combo, one with carne asada (steak) and the other called 'drippy' (ground beef) with chips and guacamole as my side. Hubby liked the help yourself and try them all salsa bar. He had three tacos with queso and chips. Very clean, very reasonable prices, very nice staff. No alcohol, but if you have to have a drink, you can go a few doors down to the Ice House afterward. Oh, breakfast is also offered during morning hours.

The food here is not very good and definitely not "authentic" mexican. I hate to give a bad review becauser the custome service was great and the staff was so nice...but the food was just bad. The tacos taste bland and lacked flavor. They have a cute salsa bar...but even the hottest sauce lacked spice. I really wanted some Tamales but they said they were out and it'd take too long to make... mind you, it was 4:00pm on a Saturday and the place wasn't even busy. So instead of tamales, we ordered nachos (even though I dont' usually eat them) The nachos were awful! There was very little meat and the ground beef tasted sweet like there was a pound of sugar in it. It was topped with that terrible spray can cheese and sour cream. And the whole thing was dripping with grease. I'll never eat there again.

Best authentic mexican food in Prairieville. Fast, cheap and delicious.

Nice little place with legit street tacos (I'm from San Antonio ). Owners are friendly and service is really quick. Had the Carne Asada and Pollo al pastor tacos. They were seasoned to perfection and garnished with queso fresco. Had the chips and queso as a side and wad pleasantly surprised by the nice kick to the queso. Great little place. I'll be sure to come back.

Best authentic Mexican food around. The prices are super cheap too! So many selections. I haven't had papusas since I've been to Honduras! And they have them here! It was so good, so happy I got them. Also the street tacos were amazing I got them with beef . The tortillas are so good too! Will definitely come back and try everything else! The inside is decorated nicely. Will become one of my regular lunch places--- and they serve breakfast! The people that work here are also super sweet

Had the cheese Papusa and loved it so much I got one to go. And OMG the spicy slaw was freshalicious. And they have so many varieties of salsa in the salsa bar along with pickled onions and jalapenos at no extra charge. I called two of my Mexican food lovin neighbors and got to go orders for them. Everyone loved the Papusas (only available Friday and Saturday) so we are planning a Saturday lunch out soon. I spoke with a few regular customers while I waited for my food. People don't eat here for the ambience. It's the authentic Mexican food and the people that cook it up from scratch that customers love. They all urged me to try the street style tacos and I plan to do that soon. I wish they were closer but I will make the drive for good simple home-style food like this.

"Wholly Molly-ness, it's Taco heave here in Baton Rouge". Street tacos, that's what it's all about at Mr. Taco! After Rebecca B has been pushing and pushing for me to go here, I finally went and ordered 15 tacos (different varieties) to-go for a lunch meeting! The double corn tortilla tacos were muy excelente! Even the folks at my meeting said this was the best they ever had in Baton Rouge! They are fresh, authentic and a bargain! I have not had tacos this great, since I lived in Los Angeles. So, if you are a true taco fan, you will definitely find this to be a hidden gem in in Baton Rouge. The Machaca was my favorite and I even like the vegetarian - a huge piece of avocado took the place of the meat. Where is it? It's in a small strip mall, off Airline Hwy, en route to Prairieville. It's in the same plaza as Ice House and Wings of Glory. You will love them and if you don't... then get your taste buds checked out! Love ya, Baton Rouge!

Superb cuisine. Authentic Mexican dining, excellent pricing, and delicious. The selection of hot sauces and salsas is diverse but less than impressive, but the food is good enough that you hardly think about it. Walked in 15 minutes before close and was ready to be apologetic for making them prepare a big meal so close to the end of business, but was met with excellent attitudes, not even a hint of annoyance. Awesome customer service. Will visit again!

Beautiful and Delicious Tacos Since Taco N Sabor is closing down, I had to find a new taco stop as soon as possible I was glancing on yelp and saw that Rebecca posted a photo of some beautiful tacos. I had to get them now! It is located in a pretty busy strip mall area. When I went inside, it was a bit smaller than I expected. I cozy feel. A regular tacos without any seafood is $1.89 while a seafood taco (baja) is a bit more. I got a chicken, pork, and fish taco. While waiting, I got a horchata! It was sooo good; I just knew this meal was going to be amazing. They also have a hot sauce/salsa bar on the other side of the counter! The tacos were on two homemade corn tortillas. I could eat the tortillas themselves! The best I have ever tasted. The chicken and pork tacos were dressed with cilantro and onions. The fish tacos had a kind of sauce and lettuce or green veggie. The first bite I was in love. Though it is a while away from my house, I will come here often. Thank you Mr. Taco!

After living in the San Diego area for over 17 years, we have been hunting for good Mexican food around Baton Rouge. We have not tried them all yet, but Mr. Taco is close to perfect. Street tacos with el pastor carnitas are excellent. The only thing keeping Mr. Taco from being the real-deal is their small adaptations to the tex-mex fair for the local customers. Example, their "carnitas chips" are called "nachos" and they put melted velveta on them instead of shredded cheese. But, that's what the SoLa customers want. And you gotta know your customers. Salsa is not picante sauce, and is made fresh along with their pico. Horchata and jamica are in the mix dispenser and bottled "Mexican" coke are in the cooler. Paputas made fresh with meets like El Pastor, carnitas, barbacoa, carne asada, and chicken. (The locals don't want Pollo- lol) and a tex-mex meat they call smelty or something like that which is basically creamy ground meat. Not something you would find at Eriberto's or Alberto's or Jaunitas, Erika's or what ever your favorite SoCal Mexican dive is called. What's missing from the menu? Cabeza! Rolled tacos, chile rellano, and adobada. They have churros, but they are not made fresh. And I threw mine in the trash. Stick to the street tacos. If you were in "TJ" that's what you would eat anyway.

Came here at 3pm craving some Mexican food. I was told the street tacos carne asada and drippy meat was popular. I order both tacos along with a baja shrimp taco. I have to say all of the tacos is good but my main favorite was the baja shrimp; juicy and cooked to perfection. The churro was okay. I would definitely come here again for some snackage

Seriously one of the best Tortilla Soups in Baton Rouge. Very brothy and full of flavor with no chunks of veggies to cloud the awesome taste. The cheese they use is like no other. Mr. Taco is truly authentic mexican food. Owners are always super nice.

I should start by saying that I L-O-V-E Mexican food! California native so I consider myself spoiled rotten with great Mexican food! With that said, I tried Mr. Taco for the first time today using a Groupon. My thoughts? How kind of you to ask... The tacos were just okay. I thought the cheese on the carne asada would be more of a "queso fresco" type cheese but it was just mozzarella. The carne asada taco also had a lot of fat which I had to picked off. Some people like fat... I just happen to not be one of those people. The shrimp tacos were okay. There are two-three small shrimps per taco. You can decide if it's worth the $2.50 per taco. Personally, I didn't think so . The tamale... So disappointing. Nothing like the tamales that I have been accustomed too. It was rather dry and uneventful. Not to mention that it tasted like it's been sitting there for a while. I had to throw it away! The Mexican coke... Yeahhhhh buddy! Overall, chipotle brings more excitement, fresh ingredients and flavors. Thanks for the experience, Groupon. No gracias to Señor Taco for the disappointing lunch. Update: Coworker ordered the burrito. The steak meat was very fatty, the lettuce was old and the avocado in the burrito was completely brown and rotten. Disgusting!!!

Its like dying and going to Taco Heaven. It's all about the street tacos at Mr. Taco and they are amazing. I would recommend them to anyone. Be prepared there are some daring things on the menu. Like a burrito no human should be able to eat in one sitting. And yet I have seen it happen.

  • David P.

A little pricy for serve yourself and take out, but flavor and freshness is excellent as is the quantity of food. Went on a Groupon and will go back, but will probably just do the Tacos and Charro Beans and do it take out.

I've never seen pupusas in Baton Rouge. I saw Mr. Taco had them (via Facebook) and decided to take a drive just to see what they were about. they were awesome, stuffed with pork and cheese and served with the best sauce on the side the menu is huge, they have breakfast and every kind of authentic Mexican cuisine you could imagine. they even sell their meat by the pound! you can tell it's fresh, and the salsa bar is both creative and outstanding. in my opinion, they just need a little more salt. go check it out. you won't be disappointed

Terrible. I called and was left on hold for 15 minutes. I called back and was placed on hold again. Mind u "hold" was the phone placed on the counter and left there. I don't know of the food is good because the service was too bad to try it.

Thank God I had a 2 hour workout before I drove over here because once I started eating, I didn't want to stop. This place is really cute, small but clean and nicely appointed in a shopping center off of Airline, nearly in Prairieville. It's not close to where I hang my hat, the unfortunate reason that I haven't stopped in before. After a quick glance at the menu board, I went with the chorizo breakfast taco, the pork hot tamale, and the pork breakfast taco. While the girls in the kitchen cooked up my Mexican feast, I hit up the salsa bar and shamelessly tried EVERY SINGLE THING. My favorites were the avocado sauce and the tomatillo, both sweet and spicy at the same time, both the perfect consistency to splash on a taco. As I sipped my Horchata (score!), my food was delivered to my ravenous delight. I dug into the Chorizo taco first and I may or may not have eaten it in two bites. It was warm and the eggs and chorizo were perfectly combined, leaving no chance of bits falling out while I was eating. Slightly drippy from the oil in the chorizo, but to me that adds to the tastiness. Next I unfolded my tamale. Also warm, it was a nice combination of pork inside rolled masa. I was able to taste both sides without feeling overwhelmed by the heaviness of the masa, and with a dip of the salsa, it was one of the best tamales I've had from a Mexican restaurant. After the first two dishes, I was stuffed to the gills but I did manage to try the pork taco and it was a delight. Juicy, shredded pork combined with eggs and cheese?! WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED? I'll definitely be back for breakfast or lunch or dinner but I do have one request, Mr. Taco. BRING ON THE LENGUA!

We saw Mr. Taco on Groupon and thought to give it a try....now we all know that Groupon can be hit and miss but this is SO worth it. If you are looking for an AUTHENTIC Mexican restaurant, this is for you. The food is absolutely delicious and the staff was so friendly. The ambience of the place is a very hole-in-the-wall vibe. There is a flat screen playing sports and plenty of your favorite Latin music playing. We were the only ones in the restaurant when we arrived, but by dinner time it picked up and everyone seemed very satisfied with their meals. The set up is order at the front register and get your own soda/horchata/punch and the food will be delivered to your table. They also have a salsa bar where you can put your own salsa on your meal and it has every type of salsa you can think of! They all look great. I ordered the El Patron which is super traditional of Mexican restaurants and it is also known as a platillo. You get your choice of meat with tortillas and rice and beans and a Mexican salad. I just build my own tacos with it. My fiance got two quesadillas, one shrimp, one chicken and my sister ordered a torta. All of us thought the food was exceptional. The meat I ordered with my tacos was pastor. Which is a highly spiced pork. It is easy to make this type of meat over dry, but their pastor was juicy and flavorful. My fiance said his shrimp in the quesadilla was perfect. Also a hard feat. I would recommend this place to anyone. I am so happy we found Mr. Taco. We will be back for more!

Just by accident, found this place and Tacos. Tacos everywhere! I'm a Baton Rouge transplant and I miss the authenticity of real tacos. You know the ones I'm talking about... They are well seasoned, come with radishes, red onion, and avocado. Oh, and don't forget the cotija cheese. Mr. Taco definitely met my expectations when it came to the authentic taco taste, smell, and display. This place has good service and a varied menu that accommodates various dietary needs. The staff is patient and helpful. It's a bit of a drive from the usual hub of good eats but that's great, because it tends to be less crowded and therefore a great place to kick back and enjoy good food. It's an excellent place to eat in an informal setting. Also, the Jamaica and Horchata were definitely worth it and only accented the food. If you're feeling very adventurous, mix the two and go crazy. Next time you're rolling down Airline and in the mood for some authentic Mexican food that isn't fully dressed in American flare, stop here and get the barbacoa with the house made chips and go crazy at the salsa bar.

Super super yummy food! If you want a great street taco. This is the place to go! I ha EBT had tacos this good since I lived in Los Angeles. Very authentic and super friendly staff. The salsa bar is huge plus too! Highly recommended.

I came for the Tamales and to try Tacos. They were just.......OK, nothing fancy. I was very pleased with the service and the store was very clean. I did like the assortment of Hot Sauce on the tables to adjust heat on your Tacos. I will try Breakfast soon!

Taco Tuesday. I told them to make whatever they wanted and was not disappointed! I wanted to go back into the kitchen and kiss the cooks dead on the lips! With tongue! I'm laying on the couch like a beached whale holding my stomach and contemplating the fact that gluttony is indeed a mortal sin. A tasty tasty tasty mortal sin!

This is as good as it gets for Baton Rouge! After having been in Los Angeles for 10+ years moving to Baton Rouge was a major blow to my Mexican food cravings. My wife who is a SoCal native loves the Tamales here and I must say the Grande Burrito is pretty darn good. They have a California Burrito even. A little pricey at $11, but it's half the size of my arm so it will stuff you. When they serve you chips and queso, they do not skimp on the queso. Best of all, they have the best breakfast burrito hands down anywhere in 100 miles of this town. I have looked. Not as good as El Matador II in Irwindale, CA, but it's close enough. Their salsa bar is well stocked and everyone who eats there is most often in a good mood, makes for good conversations when you're not stuffing your face. With a subway on one side and a hotwings place on the other, this place is packed from open to close. Well worth the trip. Half of my staff goes here for lunch on a near daily basis. Taco Tuesdays is all you can eat Taco's. Nuff said, go here, don't waste your time going anywhere else.

Finally an authentic Mexican place to go. I know it's authentic because I've seen actual real Mexicans eat here! Love the burritos, the salsa bar, and the prices.

I only got the street tacos. They were pretty good, not great. They did not crisp the meat enough and needed some salt. And they didn't seem to crisp the outside tortilla. They were good size though. But I would expect that for almost 2 bucks, hehe. Good ratio of cheese and onion and cilantro as well. I also thought the salsas were too thin and watered down and needed some salt. Lots of choices though. I wish they had more of the traditonal meats like tongue and tripe as well. That said, I might go back to try the other items.

If you want real Mexican food in Baton Rouge this is the spot! We recently moved to BR from CA and have been searching for proper and good Mexican food. My favorite is street style tacos like I used to get from the taco trucks in southern CA. Mr Taco is the real deal. I regularly get two Carne asada tacos with a tamale. The tacos are traditional street style with meat, onions, and cilantro. They have a fantastic assortment of salsas and picked onions. The guacamole is thick, chunky, and fresh. The staff is friendly and they have real bottles of Mexican coke!

Great "Bang For Your Buck!" 6.18 for 2 tacos, side and drink....EXCELLENT!!! Great variety of meat for the tacos. I will definitely will be coming back! Coming from El Paso,Tx the food brought back good memories. Really enjoyed how fast the service was, if you only have 30 minutes for lunch this is the place for you. Highly Recommend

Welcome change of pace from all the mediocre Americanized Tex-Mex around here. Much closer to taqueria food. Many types of meat to choose from. Also, they have Mexican music and Mexican soft drinks. The breakfast is also really good. This is our kids' favorite Mexican place. I recommend it.

Best breakfast in the area YES BREAKFAST. All the food I've had has been superior home made and authentic friendly staff and quick service. Great selection of homemade salsas

Visited for the first time after reading the great reviews...mistake. Tasteless tacos, tasteless cold beans and over cooked mushy rice. I won't be going back. Taco Bell is a better choice.

Real Mexican food. Don't expect the run of the mill americanized mexican food, its the real deal and is delish! The staff is really nice and is willing to adjust things to your liking!

Yikes... live in the area and gave it a try. $10.79 will buy you six mini tacos and chips/salsa and drink. Order, then sit down and wait...not a fancy place. Not sure I want another "mini" taco and was surprised that I ot $2.00 worth of food for $10.79. These folks may need some good luck. Food was good, though. Lets see... drive a little farther to Ninfas and for a $3.50 more you get a real meal.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
